There are 4 Golden Rules in keyword research. These rules are:

1. Relevant – The keyword needs to be relevant to your site.

2. Traffic – The keyword needs to be capable of generating high levels of traffic.

3. Competition – The keyword needs acceptable levels of competition.

4. Commerciality – The keyword needs the potential to drive high levels of profit.

The first two rules are followed by almost everyone that’s been in the business even for a short amount of time. The last two are a different story.

If a keyword has too much competition, it will be extremely difficult to get the search engines to rank you on page one. Commerciality – the 4th Golden Rule. That’s what this article is about and what almost everyone ignores or seems to forget. And, it’s sooooo… important!

Think of each of your keywords as a pipe with a certain amount of monetary flow passing through it.

A high commerciality keyword is a large pipe with a strong cash flow. Find and use one of these keywords and you have a large profit potential.

A low commerciality keyword is a small pipe. Not much cash will flow through it. Use one of these keywords and you won’t make much money.

Every keyword you choose has the potential to not only attract traffic, but also to attract buyers. How many times have you heard a webmaster say that he worked for months to get his website up to page one on Google, but nobody bought anything? It happens all the time!

That’s because the keyword’s commerciality was not investigated before the keyword was chosen. That’s a BIG MISTAKE!

If you are trying to promote a product/service online, your success depends upon how much traffic you get from the major search engines. It doesn’t matter if you have the best product that has ever been built or if you can provide a service better than anyone else, you will fail online unless you can get traffic from the search engines. This worked fine for a long time. But, since last November, Google’s search engines have got smarter and no longer give such links as much value as they once did.

Now, that’s not to say these type of links no longer work, because they still do. It’s just that links from article submission sites don’t carry as much weight for ranking purposes as they once did. That’s one reason why you don’t see as many articles from Ezinearticles ranking on the first page any more.

This change in Google made many web owners mad. Their websites that had been ranking well and provided them an income were no longer doing as well. Their legitimate business opportunity has dried up.

Google’s search engine will continue to change in the future. Google wants its search engines to find as many “naturally occurring” links as possible. They want their engines to find links that have been created by someone who liked something and decided to link to it. These are called 1-way links and Google likes these a lot!

So, you email your best friend and tell him about it and you leave him a 1-way link to that Lowe’s page. Google would love that 1-way link. It looks natural.

Or, you’re going to have to ask other web owners to provide you those 1-way links, which they’re not likely to do. Or, you can ask them if you can write an article for them and ask them if they’ll post it. Do you think they will? Probably not.

About 1-1/2 years ago I was a senior manager at a large manufacturing firm.
